Milk-V Duo S USB detection problem

2024-08-07 15:31:16 Ask

I have a new Milk-V Duo S with EMMC, I am trying to upload the firmware but the USB device continously appears for a few seconds and disappears repeatedly.

I was however able to boot linux image from SD card and verified working USB cables and port both data and power.

I have tried it under both windows 11 after installing the recommended USB driver and also tried it under ubuntu 24.04 and 23.10.

What could be the cause of such behaviour?

Hello, please change a USB cable or USB interface. It may be caused by poor contact

Actually I tried many USB cables which were tested OK on other devices like phone for both Data and Power.

I also tries different ports on the same PC and on another laptop, same problem.

And I also tried different operating system like windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.04 and 23.04 with no luck.

all the above tests were done without SD card inserted.

However when I use SD card with image for Duo S without eMMC, the system boots and the USB port works and I can ssh the board through it.

Can the recovery botton help in any way?

What is the use of the recovery button?

The steps has been already followed, however when it comes to downloading the firmware it starts like this:

[INFO] Waiting for USB device connection: ---

[INFO] found usb device vid=0x3346 pid=0x1000

[INFO] downloading file: .\rom\boot.emmc

Then it looses the USB device and fails.

after a few seconds the USB device re-appears and the downloading tries to resume, but the USB device disappears again.

It tries several time and then quits.

After a few days of search, I found another way to flash the eMMC without USB connection in the following link:

https://community.milkv.io/t/how-to-get-the-operating-system-on-the-emmc/1634/12

In short, here is how:

The procedure is:

  1. build or download the emmc image
  2. format an SD card as FAT32
  3. decompress the upgrade.zip file to the SD card (all the files should be in the root directory)
  4. insert the card, wait a few seconds for it to flash (you can observe it using the serial console), turn off
  5. remove the SD card (important - otherwise it will flash again)
  6. turn the board on - congratulations, you have a system on eMMC

Was this so hard to put in the Docs?
