Heading to Germany for a fishing competition

2026-04-14 05:29:54 Ask

I'm heading to Germany in a few weeks. Got invited to this fishing competition over there which is pretty cool. Never done one of these events in Europe before but figured why not give it a shot. Want to see what kind of fish they've got and meet up with people from different countries who are into the same thing. I'm also thinking about driving around Bavaria afterwards, check out the scenery and all that. Can't just fly all the way there and only bring back memories of standing by a lake for three days. Where should I look for a rental car? Are there cheaper local companies or is it all the same international chains like Sixt and Hertz?

Europe trips are worth milking for everything you can get out of them since you're already spending the money to fly over. Three days at a competition and then straight to the airport is a waste when you've got a whole country sitting right there. Bavaria's got some incredible landscapes once you get away from the cities, roads are smooth and people actually drive like they've got some sense. The big rental chains are everywhere and easy to book but they're pricey because you're paying for the name and the convenience. Smaller local outfits exist but good luck finding them if you don't speak the language, and their fleets tend to be older or limited in what's available.

The chain places make it simple but you're basically getting gouged for that simplicity. Walk up to the counter, sign some papers, drive away in a generic sedan that's been through a thousand other renters. Works fine but there's nothing special about it and your wallet feels lighter than it should. Local options cut out the middleman and you're dealing with actual people instead of corporate policies. You can look at where to rent a car in Germany here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/germany . It's locals putting up their own vehicles so you skip the corporate markup and get better rates. Selection varies depending on what people have available, but you'll find something that works. Just make sure you're clear on insurance because German roads are fast and other drivers don't mess around on the autobahn.

Once you get out of the towns, Bavaria has some stunning landscapes, Retro Bowl calm highways, and people who drive with common sense.
