I had a family emergency last March and had to cancel a trip to Charlotte just three hours before takeoff. I was worried I’d lose the money, but since I wasn't on a Basic Economy ticket, I just tapped "Cancel Trip" in my account. The flight credit appeared almost immediately. I’ve found that handling it myself through the portal is the best way to instantly, or modify flights because it removes the stress of explaining things to an agent. Just keep an eye on the fare difference if you decide to re-book!
