It’s funny how much "luck" people think is involved, but it's actually quite clinical. On my flight home from Miami, I was #4 on the list for a seat upgrade. Since I’m Platinum, I was ahead of the Gold folks but behind the Executive Platinums. The best way to ensure you’re in the running is to make sure your AAdvantage number is attached the second you book. If seats are left 48 hours out, the system starts clearing people based on that list. No more "asking nicely" at the counter!
