I’ve flown Frontier dozens of times and you definitely don't have to buy a seat. If you skip the selection, they’ll randomly assign you one for free at check-in. The only risk is being stuck in a middle seat or separated from your group. If you’re flying solo and don’t mind where you sit, skipping the fee is the best way to keep the trip cheap.
