I learned the hard way that Basic Economy is pretty restrictive. Last summer, I tried to upgrade to Comfort+ for more legroom, but Delta doesn't allow any upgrades or seat changes on those tickets. The best way to avoid being stuck in the back is to always book at least "Main Cabin." It costs a bit more upfront but saves you from being "locked in."
