I ran into the "not eligible" error last week when trying to catch an earlier flight to Boston. It turns out my ticket was Basic Economy, which doesn't allow same-day changes. The best way to avoid this is to book Main Cabin and use the "Same-Day Standby" feature in the app, which is way more flexible.
