It remains powered on by default, but you can remove the battery or develop your own system to enter deep sleep mode and then wake it up via a button.

This board failed.

Yes you can setup the deep sleep, but there is no way to switch off the backlight of the display. It is hard connected to 3v3. So you will never get a long runtime on battery.

It's just a design error.
